Mud Sales in Lancaster County 2014
Mud sale? What the heck is a ‘mud sale’? Why would anyone want to buy mud??? These are the questions that ran through my head the first time I heard “Mud Sale.” We were visiting another bed and breakfast and saw a quilt that was quite to my liking. The innkeeper told me she got it, for a great price, at a mud sale!
What is a Mud Sale?
A mud sale is the name that Lancaster County gives to the annual auctions at local firehouses. They are daylong, bustling events with thousands of attendees- bidders, buyers and gawkers. So many things are auctioned from Amish quilts to horses, from locally-made crafts to even the kitchen sink. And the food! You can be sure you won’t leave hungry! Start your day with a Pennsylvania Dutch sticky bun or whoopie pie or sip homemade chicken corn soup to warm your belly. The food is good, hearty and plentiful!
The sales started partly to give farmers a chance to get new or used equipment in time for the planting season, but now the sales are the major fund raising event for many fire companies in Lancaster County. The majority of the auctions are held starting in late winter going into spring, hence the name ‘mud sale’. You know, the ground is thawing, the auctions go on all day as it keeps getting muddier and muddier with the sun shining and people walking about. Some of the sales even happen into the summer.
Most sales begin early in the morning so you would need to come at least the night before and stay in a bed and breakfast. (The EJ Bowman House is nice!) These sales are a must even if you don’t buy anything because you will experience the mixing of cultures, Amish and English, and the fast-paced excitement of auctions and traditional food from Lancaster County.
