Home's History

The original house was built in 1860 to serve as a residence for noted Neffsville physician-surgeon, Dr. Edmund J. Bowman (July 6, 1832 – February 5, 1883).  This was his family home.

This “commodious mansion” was then purchased by Dr. Elias Hoffman Witmer (1853 – 1939).  During Dr. Witmer’s residence, the third story and a two story addition on the south side of the house were completed by 1888.  Another three floor structure was added to the back southwest corner of the house in 1901 – 1903. The house was home for his family and served as an office-dispensary.

At Dr. E. H. Witmer’s death the house was willed to his son, C. Howard Witmer, M.D. who rented the house and converted it to a ‘duplex’ in the late 1940’s.  The house was sold to Mr. Henry W. Hauck and his wife, Anna Dean J. Hauck in May of 1961.

During the Haucks’ ownership, one part of the home was used as the family’s residence and the rest was rented.  The Haucks also owned and operated the General Store located across the street at the corner of Valley Road and Lititz Pike.

In January of 1999, Alice and Murphey purchased what was now a two-bathroom rooming house.  After five months of planning with architect, Carol Hickey, contractors, as well as township and state code officials, eight months of total renovation restored the house to a special grandeur and historical significance.

The E. J. Bowman House is of the Italianate Victorian style.  The roof is topped with balustrade deck.  Its cornices have medallions in relief and ornately carved brackets with turned finials.  The original windows and shutter type have been preserved.  The Italianate style (1840 – 1880) is associated with an almost square two or three story house with very wide eaves usually supported by large brackets, tall thin first floor windows, and a low pitch hip roof topped with a cupola.  Moldings and details accentuate the formal balance of the house.  A central one bay porch or long porches also are evident in the style.
